Got my Mac on with Marvel Heroes

First things first, if the double entendre of the post title flew over your head, then words cannot describe how excited I am for Marvel Heroes. An MMO coupled with my favorite franchise – what is not to love? I’m fairly confidant wifey will be all over it as well. If asked, she really won’t want another game to dig her teeth into but I’ve a strong feeling she will eventually see the light. Why? Two words: Scarlet Witch. Oh. Em. Gee. Her as a playable character? Shut up and take our money. Well, except that this is a free-to-play MMO. What is not to love?

Well, it isn’t going to be released on Mac (yet). /tears. There is promise sometime after launch – but how long is long? In the World (of Warcraft) the term Soon sends shivers up spines of the player-base:

Soon: Copyright 2004-2013 Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. All rights reserved. “Soon” does not imply any particular date, time, decade, century, or millennia in the past, present, and certainly not the future. “Soon” shall make no contract or warranty between Blizzard Entertainment and the end user. “Soon” will arrive some day, Blizzard does guarantee that “soon” will be here before the end of time. Maybe. Do not make plans based on “soon” as Blizzard will not be liable for any misuse, use, or even casual glancing at “soon.”

That is what makes me a sad panda. No pun intended.

I can only hope it really is on the cards and this isn’t false hope, smoke and mirrors. One solution, I know certain folk might suggest, would be to get a couple of high-end PCs, but that is hardly a solution nor is it economically sensible. A more sensible solution from the likes of Captain Rogers would be to use BootCamp and run Windows on a Mac. Now, where that is a very sensible and very well thought out solution – I will toy with that idea, I’m sure, once it does launch only to put it on the scrap pile once I really think it through. Truth be told, I want to run it natively as I do with every other game and program.

Now, it is at this point I expect any PC fan-boy to jump in and tell me I made my bed so I should have to sleep in it. Fair enough, nothing I say will convince you otherwise. But this isn’t about Mac vs PC. Having worked in software development I understand the cost differentials. I also know other companies both large (Blizzard, EA) and small indies (2D, Mojang) have found great success producing for the Apple systems in recent years.  This isn’t a rant aim at anyone or me getting on my high horse or even feeling entitled. Trust me, I’m the most anti-entitled fellow you could ever find. This is just me hoping that “soon” will be a date that is tangible and realistic because, frankly, this looks an awesome game and I want to be part of the universe!

Steam, maybe? Who knows. I will slowly whittle away the hours wondering how long after launch it will happen – if it will happen… when it will happen – but you can bet your bottom dollar I will be all over that game once it is released for the Mac – and I know I won’t be the only one!
