Okay. I know…another New Super Mario Bros. game? Well, I have a few things to say on that matter.
1. I ROCK at Mario platformers.
2. I’m close to 100, so I picked some shorter games. Oops.
3. These are games that I should have beaten already.
I’ve been playing video games ever since I could drool on myself, and throughout the years, I’ve played (and beaten) all sorts of games. But I had a streak in my life where I liked to sample games. I’d play through about half of the game, then I’d get sick of it, and I’d jump to the next one. However, now I’m in the season of my life where I want to beat those half-finished games- partially because I owe it to myself to beat them AND I need to reach 100. (I’m getting antsy!)
Unfortunately, New Super Mario Bros. 2 was nothing special. All of these Mario platformers are starting to mold together in my head. But then again, I fly through them so quickly. I figure out the level design, take the time to respect the finer details, and then I just crush it.
So when I look at my Beaten Games List and see that I’m in the 90s, I just want to get to 100. So I’m playing these shorter games, and it’s not that these games are bad or that they are of lesser quality… but they don’t stand up to the Ocarina of Times or the BioShocks of the modern era. There are some seriously awesome video games out there- games with story and character development.
And then there’s the Mario platformer. I mean, these games are fun; beating a tough level is rewarding, and the collectibles are oh-so tantalizing. But for me, I’d rather have a narrative to back my video games. I know that’s not what Mario platformers are trying to accomplish and it’s really not fair for me to equate New Super Mario Bros. 2 to The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Regardless, they each hold a spot on my Beaten Games List and so I do my best to give each game a fair dissection.
For what New Super Mario Bros. 2 was trying to accomplish, it did a good job. It wasn’t too lengthy, too difficult, too anything. It was tame, and I had a relaxing afternoon during my playthrough.
It was fun. It wasn’t groundbreaking, but that’s not where they were aiming.
Either way, #94 is complete. And I have to tell you the truth… I beat a couple more short games to sneak my way closer to 100. But I promise that I have some real blockbusters coming up!
