Quick Guide to Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Quick Guide to Star Wars: The Force Awakens

By December 15, 2015 Pulp Non-Fiction No Comments

Can you hear that? It’s the Star Wars fandom getting ready to take over the world once again. The fandom was never asleep, really – we were just silently sitting down, waiting for a sign… and that sign came in the form of Disney acquiring Lucasfilm and choosing JJ Abrams to helm a new adventure in a galaxy far, far away.

It has been 10 years since we last saw a Star Wars movie on the big screen and while Revenge of the Sith was the best out of the mess that were the prequels, we were left wanting more.

And now here we are. Counting down the hours to watch the Star Wars logo on the big screen, followed by the iconic scrolling text.

Honestly, though, it has been far too long since the last prequel and, of course, even longer since Episode VI. A lot of things have happened in the galaxy and very few details have been revealed. Don’t worry; there are things we do know for sure and here they are – so you can be 100% ready for Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The First Order and the Knights of Ren

There has to be a dark side, and now that the Empire is gone, the First Order was born.

The First Order has been described by some as “the remnants of the Empire” while some others deny this. We won’t know for sure until we watch the movie, but what is true is that they are the ones leading the dark side nowadays.

The Knights of Ren are a sort of cult, and this is where the main villain took his name because, just like the Empire and all the “Darths,” “Ren” is a title.

One very important detail you must remember at all times: Kylo Ren is not a Sith. These are not Siths. It’s a new order.

As explained by JJ Abrams:

“That all came out of conversations about what would have happened if the Nazis all went to Argentina but then started working together again? What could be born of that? Could the First Order exist as a group that actually admired the Empire? Could the work of the Empire be seen as unfulfilled? And could Vader be a martyr? Could there be a need to see through what didn’t get done?”

Not Siths, but just as scary – or possibly even scarier.

Stormtroopers vs. Luke

The stormtroopers have been told that Luke is a villain because he destroyed their beloved Empire, and now they’re going after him. This is most likely why we haven’t seen Luke.

And… that’s it. I told you details were scarce.

Finn, Rey, and Poe: Our new heroes

Finn (John Boyega) is a stormtrooper who will change his path to a lighter one throughout the course of the story, with the help of Rey (Daisy Ridley). It’s going to be interesting to see why or what made him see that being a stormtrooper was not something he wanted to do forever. I truly hope we see some backstory on how and why he became part of the army of the First Order.

Rey is a scavenger from the desert planet Jakku, and our main character. Yes! Female character on the lead! Very little is known about her character except the fact that she hasn’t seen her family since she was five, but naturally there are a ton of theories floating around. Of course, I have my theory as well, which I will share under a spoiler break at the end of this post.

Poe Dameron, aside from having the best name in the entire galaxy and being played by one of my loves (Oscar Isaac), is a pilot of the Resistance. He is the one we have seen piloting an X-Wing and having a great time. He is also the one being captured and tortured by Kylo Ren, as seen on the final extended trailer. Yeah. Heartache is on its way.

These three are our new good guys on the side of the light. Now let’s meet the baddies.

Captain Phasma, Kylo Ren, General Hux, and Supreme Leader Snoke

Ah, villains. I love them.

Captain Phasma (played by actual queen of the galaxy Gwendoline Christie) is the mega badass chrome stormtrooper we’ve seen on the trailers, and it’s ten times more amazing because it is a woman.

A stormtrooper woman. In a chrome suit. Yes.

Kylo Ren is the #1 villain. He takes his name after being part of the Knights of Ren and now he is on the side of the First Order. Ren has been described as a “Darth Vader fanboy”, having modelled his helmet after Vader’s iconic one. This fanaticism was made clear on the last trailer, where Ren said he “would finish” what Vader started.

Very little is known about General Hux and we have only seen him once, on a Disney XD behind the scenes featurette. Played by Domhnall Gleeson, Hux is the leader of the Starkiller Base, the primary base of the First Order.

Supreme Leader Snoke is played by the king of motion capture, Andy Serkis. We have no idea what he looks like, but he is the voice we heard on the first teaser. Snoke is Kylo Ren’s master and a very important and dangerous figure of the dark side.

And speaking of the Starkiller base, JJ Abrams shared it is more dangerous than the Death Star. Brace yourselves.

“It is very much – and it’s acknowledged as such in the movie – apparently another Death Star. But what it’s capable of, how it works, and what that threat is, is far greater than what the Death Star could have done. Starkiller Base is another step forward, technologically speaking, in terms of power,” J.J Abrams told Entertainment Weekly.

Things are getting more real than ever out there.

Your new favourite droid

The adorable white and orange droid we have seen rolling around in trailers, TV spots, and teasers, is none other than BB8.

This ultra cute droid will be a faithful companion to Rey and Finn. Its origins are also part of multiple fan theories, but a children’s book kinda spoiled who its real owner is (and I say “kinda” because said book is not 100% legit Star Wars merch)

WARNING! - Spoiler Click to see it.
according to it, BB8 is property of Poe Dameron. How it ends up with Rey is something we will learn in the movie

Truth is that BB8 is already a fan favourite and we love it.

And the originals are here!

Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, Han Solo, Chewbacca, R2D2, and C3PO are back. Anyone else having tears in their eyes?

First off, you shall not refer to Leia as “Princess” anymore – it’s General Organa now, thankyouverymuch. Leia will most likely bring a ton of feels, as Carrie Fisher has described her as “solitary” and “under a lot of pressure”.

“Committed as ever to her cause, but I would imagine feeling somewhat defeated, tired, and pissed [off]”, Fisher said.

Han Solo is back with Chewie and the legendary Millennium Falcon, but Han hasn’t changed as much as you might have thought after watching the last trailer. Harrison Ford stated that Han is still Force-cynical but that there had been some emotional elements that made his character grow. I’m cool with that.

C3PO hasn’t appeared anywhere other than the poster, but R2D2 did pop up in the first trailer – the one narrated by Luke Skywalker and, surprise! R2D2 is with Luke. But where in the world… erm, galaxy, is Luke Skywalker?!

We know the First Order is looking for him, so the natural bet is that he is hiding (well, duh), but some people are still convinced he turned to the dark side.

Don’t worry, we will know for sure in just a couple of hours (hours!).

Last but not least… theory.

So now that you know the basics, it’s time for my favourite part of being in a fandom: theories.

Hell yeah. Ok, listen (read?): my theory is based on all this plus the trailers, TV spots, teasers, action figures, and pics that have been released and are 100% totally legit. In case a part of it turns out to be correct (I doubt all of it will be, but if it is, then I would have cracked the code. YAY!) and you don’t want any ideas implanted in your mind before the movie, my theory will be kept after a spoiler break.

WARNING! - Spoiler Click to see it.
Ok so, Rey hasn’t seen her family in decades, and the First Order is looking for Luke. Hey, is Rey Luke’s daughter? After all, she is force sensitive plus Leia asking her who she is makes me think there’s some Skywalker blood running in her veins.

When Poe Dameron is captured by the First Order, he helps Finn escape by giving him his jacket – that’s why we have seen Finn and Poe wearing the same jacket. Now, my very first bet, from the moment I saw the first teaser, is that Poe is Luke’s child, which now kinda clashes with my Rey-theory but it’s not that crazy, amirite? I won’t abandon this idea of Skywalker siblings but I like the one of just Rey being Luke’s kid better. Also, a friend came up with the idea that BB8 was made by Luke to look after Rey but now that there are big chances of BB8 being Poe’s property, which could be because he is also Luke’s kid.

Phew, that was long. Moving on.

And now Kylo Ren. At first I thought he could be Luke’s child too (I know, I know. I am giving all the children to Luke) but then I remembered Leia is a Skywalker as well. So. What if. Kylo Ren. Is. Leia and Han’s. Son. Who turned. To the dark side. To fulfill. His grandfather’s. Plans. !!!

I read one theory that said Rey and Kylo could be twins (because Luke and Leia and genes and that) and while it is not completely bonkers, it goes against my Rey-Luke idea and I don’t like that. But it could be possible!

Also, there was a moment in time where I thought Poe Dameron was going to be part of the dark side for at least a few minutes of the movie due to the heavy torture he went through courtesy of Kylo Ren.

So basically, I say Rey is Luke’s kid, Kylo Ren is Han and Leia’s rebellious child, Poe will help Finn escape by giving him his jacket, and Poe could also be a Skywalker.

Ok, I think I’m done.

I hope this guide helped you clear some doubts you might have had about what’s going on with Episode VII but most importantly, I hope you are even more excited about it after reading some of the details.

We are a family, guys. One big, happy, immortal family, which is why I beg you not to spoil the movie for anyone. I’ll be watching it on Thursday morning so, if you can’t contain the excitement and want to talk about it, hit me up. Don’t share details on social media.

Spoilers are not cool. Not even Darth Sidious liked spoilers.

Have fun! Cry if you want to (I know I’m not going to be able to hold the tears once the “Lucasfilm” logo appears), laugh, gasp, enjoy being in a room full of people with the same enthusiasm and passion as you. This is one hell of a fantastic fandom.

May the force be with you!
